Two suspects were arrested and charged for armed robbery yesterday after they robbed security guards who were transporting cash from Eshowe to Gingindlovu – KwaZulu-Natal – on 20 October.
The suspects allegedly opened fire on the security van and the driver lost control. They demanded the safe key and made off with an undisclosed amount of cash.
The Richards Bay Organised Crime Unit searched the homestead of the other suspect and recovered three firearms as well as R27 000 in his house. The suspects’ brother was also found in possession of a .38 revolver and he was also arrested.
The firearms will be sent to ballistics to ascertain if they were used in the commission of any crime in the country.
The Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni applauded members of the Organised Crime Unit for the arrests and investigation.
“We will continue to hunt down the remaining suspects and put them behind bars where they belong. As part of our Festive Season operations we will be hunting down all wanted suspects and ensuring they are brought to book for their crimes,” Ngobeni said.
