According to the Public Protector Thuli Madonsela, South Africa’s greatest heritage is its Constitution.
“South Africans’ national heritage goes beyond historical knowledge, traditional clothes, music, language, and so forth. Our greatest heritage is the Constitution.”
Madonsela said that when constitutional rights were violated there must be avenues for vindicating those rights.
She also criticised the idea that because she was not a judge the investigations conducted by her office could only result in recommendations that were not binding.
“We all know that you need not be a judge to have power to make binding decisions,” she said.
