Mpumalanga – A 30-year-old serial rapist from Shabalala near Hazyview, Hendry Skhai, has received four life sentences yesterday at the Nelspruit Regional Court. The penalty includes four counts of rape and an additional 6 years for common robberies.
The accused targeted women between the ages of 21 and 27 by misleading them to believe that he knew short cuts to the places they wanted to go. He would then follow, rape and rob them of their belongings.
“The hard work by the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offence Investigations in Nelspruit is applauded indeed,” said the South African Police Service in Mpumalanga, Major General Meshack Nogwanya.
“It is evident that the diligence by our members is not in vain hence the sentence. I must also mention that as SAPS in Mpumalanga, we are pleased by the sentence handed down to the accused, who is insolently disrespectful and have no audacity on the dignity of others particularly the vulnerable women and children.”
Throughout the trial, the Magistrate said Skhai did not show any remorse to his vicious and barbaric acts and attempted to mislead the court that all his victims were his girlfriends.
After being found guilty, Skhai tried to convince the court not to send him to prison as he has a son to look after. The Magistrate told Skhai that he should blame himself that his son will grow up without his father as he (Skhai) should have thought about his son before engaging into criminal activities with the consequences of him being incarcerated.
Maj Gen Nogwanya said that the sentencing of Skhai happened during Women’s Month and reiterated the point to celebrate this month by respecting women.
According to Maj Gen Nogwanya, the sentence hanged around the neck of Skhai, by all means will serve as a deterrent to other potential criminals.
